What's in Saltwash?
Saltwash® is a patent-pending product. Its chemical composition has an active ingredient that, when added to paint and applied to any surface, begins to dry throughout at once, giving the desired layered, aged look. It has NO VOCs and is a lead-free product.
04.
How do I use DIY Clay Paint?
Clean and dry the object to be painted.
Remove the lid & stir thoroughly (sometimes, you don't even need to stir DIY Paint! It's that good)
Apply one coat & allow to dry (15 minutes to a few hours to dry, depending on the climate)
Apply a second coat, if needed. Allow to dry.
Seal the surface with a DIY PAINT FINISHING PRODUCT.
05.
How do I use a DIY Liquid Patina?
INSTRUCTIONS:
Allow DIY Paint to dry for 24 hours to ensure it is set before applying DIY Liquid Patina.
Pour a small amount directly onto your dry surface, and use a rag, sponge, or paintbrush to apply an even coat to the entire surface.
TIPS:
Work in small sections to avoid a patchy finish.
Apply a second coat to minimize brush strokes.
Use as glue and sealer for decoupage projects.
06.
How do I use DIY Wax?
Allow DIY Paint to dry completely before applying wax. (15 minutes to a few hours.)
Use wax brush or lint free cloth to evenly apply a thin layer of wax. (Surface may appear uneven or translucent)
Allow to dry overnight. (Surface will even out)
After wax has dried, buff to a beautiful hard sheen with a soft cloth.
Finished surfaces should be kept free of moisture and extreme use for a week or more, to fully cure or harden.
07.
How much Saltwash should I mix into my paint?
The typical mix suggestion is 16oz chalk/clay paint + 12 oz Saltwash.
08.
How much paint do I need?
8 OZ SAMPLE JAR. Perfect for a small project like a chair or a small side table.
16 OZ PINT. Usually, it is more than enough to complete a good-sized piece of furniture.
32 OZ QUART. It covers approximately 150 square feet and will cover several pieces of furniture.
09.
How much Saltwash do I need?
When mixed with your paint of choice:
a 10oz can typically covers 15-20 sqft
a 42oz can typically covers 65-75 sqft
11.
Which sealer should I use?
I use our Clear Wax sealer for indoor accent furniture. Liquid Patina is a little more durable and has a satin sheen. Big Top is our most durable top coat. I use that on furniture that gets a lot of use.
12.
How do I add texture to my project?
There are a couple of ways to achieve texture. You can let your DIY Paint sit out for a few minutes to let it thicken up. Since it is clay-based, the thicker it is, the more texture you'll achieve. If you want even more texture, I suggest you add Saltwash to your paint. That additive will give you texture galore.
13.
Why does the paint have streaks in it after I put the sealer on?
The paint will temporarily have streaks once you have put the sealer on. As it cures, it will even back out.
14.
What do I do if my paint is too thick?
Since DIY Paint is clay-based, you can add water to thin it out. I use a water mister when I paint to get a smooth finish.
15.
Why is my paint drying a lighter color?
DIY paint is primarily clay-based and will dry lighter. If you like the lighter color, I recommend using clear wax to seal it. The wax will temporarily look darker but will lighten as it drys. If you prefer the darker version of the paint, I recommend using either the Crystal Clear Liquid Patina or Big Top.
